KOSIA-SMEDA is the abbreviated name originated from a firm's field of activity: Small and Medium Enterprise Development, where "KOSIA is SMEDA in the Azerbaijani language.
Founded as a project in the framework of European Commission Tacis Programme in Azerbaijan in 1994, KOSIA-SMEDA initially begun its activities as a non-profit making organisation in the fields of business consulting, business training and business information supplies.
Since 1995 KOSIA-SMEDA has become increasingly active in implementation of various initiatives of European Commission related to SME development. KOSIA-SMEDA has recommended itself as a reliable partner and has been appointed as a long-term country representative of a number of EC programmes initiated to support and promotes the SME sector of Azerbaijan. Among these programmes are ESSN - the European Senior Service Network, the Europartenariat - business meetings in Europe, BRE - the European Bureau of Commerce, GTPNet -the Global Trade Point Network and others.

KOSIA-SMEDA has developed into independent consultancy organisation specialised in the fields of promotion and support of SMEs. The support and promotion of the SME sector of Azerbaijan is being done through a portfolio of services KOSIA-SMEDA implements projects on a national, regional and local level; amongst others on behalf of the European Commission Tacis Programme, as well as a number of other international public and private clients.

KOSIA-SMEDA currently has 14 permanent staff members and more than 20 free-lance consultants and experts. All professionals have a wide range of national and multinational experience, gained during short and long term assignments in project design and implementation. KOSIA-SMEDA relies on its experts, who not only have the necessary basic academic knowledge on the specific fields, but who also possess many years of practical experience.
